5 Stones Florist Bespoke
A little care goes a long way in extending the life and beauty of your fresh flowers. Here are our expert tips to help your bouquets and arrangements bloom longer, especially in Singapore’s tropical climate.
Hydrate Promptly: If your flowers arrive in wrapping, remove it as soon as possible.
Prepare the Vase: Use a clean vase to prevent bacteria. Wash it with mild soap and rinse thoroughly.
Trim the Stems: Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut about 2-3 cm (1 inch) off each stem at a 45-degree angle. This creates a fresh opening for water intake. Re-trim every 2-3 days.
Remove Foliage: Strip any leaves that will sit below the waterline in the vase. Submerged leaves decay quickly and pollute the water.
Use Cool, Fresh Water: Fill the vase about one-third to half full. In our warm weather, check water levels daily and top up as needed.
Flower Food is Key: Always use the flower food packet. It contains nutrients to feed the blooms and biocides to slow bacterial growth—crucial in our humidity.
Change Water Regularly: For best results, change the water completely every 2 days. Rinse the vase, re-trim stems, and add fresh water with new flower food.
Avoid Direct Sunlight & Heat: Place your arrangement in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, windows, air conditioning vents, ceiling fans, or electronic appliances that generate heat.
Keep Away from Fruit: Do not place flowers near fruit bowls. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which causes flowers to age prematurely.
Cool Nights: If possible, moving your flowers to a cooler room (like an air-conditioned bedroom) overnight can significantly extend their life.
Flowers with Woody Stems (e.g., Roses, Lilacs): For a better water intake, split the bottom of the stem vertically about 1 cm or gently crush it with a hammer.
Delicate Blooms (e.g., Hydrangeas, Peonies): These are thirstier. Mist their petals lightly with water using a spray bottle.
Tropical Flowers (e.g., Orchids, Heliconias, Anthuriums): Often require less water. Ensure stems are not sitting in stagnant water to prevent rot.
Remove Fading Blooms: Gently pull out any flowers as they begin to wilt to keep the arrangement looking fresh and prevent ethylene spread.
Refresh the Look: As some flowers fade, you can create a smaller, fresh bouquet with the remaining blooms.
Drying: Some flowers, like roses or hydrangeas, can be air-dried upside down in a cool, dark, dry place for a lasting keepsake.
Q: How long should my flowers last?
A: With proper care, most bouquets should last beautifully for 3-5 days. Some hardier varieties may last longer.
Q: My flowers seem wilted soon after arrival. What should I do?
A: Don’t worry—they might just be thirsty! Follow the steps above for a full re-cut and fresh water. For severe wilting, submerge the entire stems (up to the flower heads) in cool water for 20-30 minutes to rehydrate (this is known as "reviving").
Q: Can I use ice cubes or sugar/vinegar in the water?
A: We strongly recommend using the provided flower food. Homemade remedies can sometimes promote bacterial growth. In our climate, clean water and flower food are most effective.
Q: Do you have tips for funeral wreaths or standing sprays?
A: For sympathy tributes, keep them in the coolest area possible. Gently mist the floral foam at the base with water daily to keep it moist, unless instructed otherwise.
